Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
Purpose
FERPA is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. It gives parents certain rights with respect to their children’s education records, which transfer to students when they turn 18 or attend a school beyond the high school level (“eligible students”).
Parent and Student Rights under FERPA
The right to inspect and review the student’s education records within 45 days of a request.
The right to request the amendment of records believed to be inaccurate or misleading.
The right to provide written consent before personally identifiable information (PII) from education records is disclosed, except as allowed by law.
The right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education if the school fails to comply with FERPA.
