Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964

Purpose

Title VI is a federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on race, color, or national origin in any school or program that receives federal funding.

Student Rights Under Title VI

  • Equal access to educational programs and activities, free from discrimination.

  • Protection from racially hostile environments.

  • Access to language support services if a student or family has limited English proficiency.

  • The right to file a complaint if discrimination occurs.
